The Monumental Serenata is the ceremonial opening of Queima das Fitas, the University of Porto's century-old graduation festival. At precisely 00h01 on Sunday May 3, finalist students from across the university's faculties — wrapped in their traditional black capes and clutching the coloured ribbons that mark their course — gather on the steps of Praça do Marquês to sing fado de Coimbra and the canonical academic ballads. The audience listens in silence; many veterans return year after year just for this moment.

The Serenata is the most introspective night of an otherwise raucous week. Where the rest of Queima is parades, concerts, and stadium-scale parties at Queimódromo, the Serenata is intimate — guitars, voices, and a crowd that knows every word. Visitors are welcome and the square fills early; arriving by 23h is sensible if you want to see anything at all. Bring a light jacket; May nights in Porto are still cool.

Entry is free and there is no ticketing. Praça do Marquês is on yellow metro line D (Marquês station) about ten minutes from Trindade, and the surrounding streets fill with students walking up from Aliados and the Baixa. The Serenata is broadcast live on RTP and streamed by Federação Académica do Porto, but the in-person atmosphere — capes, ribbons, hush — is the reason to be there.
