Porto Through the Seasons: Festivals, Wine and When to Go

Baris here. "When is the best time to visit Porto?" My answer depends on what you want from the trip. Spring is good for walking, summer is festival season, autumn is harvest time, and winter is quiet apart from Christmas and New Year. Here is what each season looks like, with the events that come back every year. For recurring events I give the usual timing; where the next edition's dates are already confirmed, I say so.

Spring in Porto (March to May)

Spring is mild and the crowds are smaller than in summer, which makes it a good time for the hills, the gardens and long walks along the river.

Key Events and Activities

• Queima das Fitas: The university students' end-of-year festival, in early May. Daytime parades through the city are free to watch; the night concerts happen at the Queimódromo, next to Parque da Cidade, and need tickets (16 and over). The 2027 nights are announced for 1 to 8 May. Details on the official site.
• Serralves em Festa: A free weekend of contemporary art, music, dance and theatre across the Serralves museum and park, usually at the end of May (the 2026 edition ran from 29 to 31 May). Check serralves.pt for the next dates. Rua D. João de Castro 210, 4150-417 Porto.
• Gardens: The Jardins do Palácio de Cristal have peacocks and views down to the Douro. The University of Porto's Jardim Botânico is open every day, 9:00 to 18:00 from November to March and 9:00 to 19:00 from April to October. Jardim Botânico: Rua do Campo Alegre 1191. Summer in Porto (June to August)

Long days, warm evenings and the busiest months of the year. Book accommodation early if your dates overlap with São João or one of the big festivals.

Key Events and Activities

• Festa de São João: The city's biggest night, from 23 to 24 June every year. People hit each other on the head with plastic hammers, grill sardines in the street and stay out until morning. There are free concerts on Avenida dos Aliados and a fireworks show over the Douro around midnight. The programme is published on Agenda Porto in June.
• Primavera Sound Porto: Four days of indie, alternative and electronic music in Parque da Cidade in June. The 2027 edition is set for 10 to 13 June. Tickets on primaverasound.com.
• Elétrico Festival: A daytime electronic music festival in Parque Urbano da Pasteleira, usually in early July (3 to 5 July in 2026). See eletricofest.com.
• MEO Marés: The festival formerly called Marés Vivas, now on Praia do Aterro in Leça da Palmeira (Matosinhos), with pop and rock headliners. The 2027 edition is set for 16 to 18 July. See MEO's festival page.
• The coast: When the city gets hot, do what locals do and go to the beach. Matosinhos is the easiest, with seafood restaurants in the streets behind it. In Gaia, Praia do Senhor da Pedra has a small hexagonal chapel from 1686 built on a rock by the sea.

Autumn in Porto (September to November)

The summer crowds thin out and the weather is often still good in September and early October. This is harvest season in the Douro and a good time for the Port lodges.

Key Events and Activities

• The grape harvest (vindima): In the Douro Valley the harvest usually runs through September into early October. Some quintas run harvest programmes with grape picking and foot-treading in lagares, on set dates; prices vary a lot, so check with the quinta directly.
• Port wine lodges in Gaia: Easier to book than in summer.
  • Cálem has a cellar tour with an optional fado show. See tour.calem.pt.
  • Taylor's runs a self-guided museum route through its cellars on your phone (bring headphones), with two wines included. Rua do Choupelo 250, Vila Nova de Gaia.
  • Graham's runs guided tours of its 1890 lodge with Port tastings. Rua do Agro 141, Vila Nova de Gaia.
• Festa do Outono at Serralves: A free family weekend in the Serralves park on the last weekend of September, with workshops, music and theatre (26 and 27 September in 2026).
• Iberanime: A Japanese pop culture convention (cosplay, manga, gaming) at Exponor in Matosinhos, usually in October (10 and 11 October in 2026). See Exponor's calendar.
• Rainy-day culture:
  • Livraria Lello is open daily from 9:00 to 19:30. Entry is by ticket, and the ticket works as a voucher towards a book. Buy online on the Lello site. Rua das Carmelitas 144, 4050-161 Porto.
  • Casa da Música has concerts most weeks and daily guided tours of the building (€12). Avenida da Boavista 604-610, 4149-071 Porto.
  • Fado: Ideal Clube de Fado runs one-hour concerts every day with two singers and two guitarists; tickets are €21 (€16 for ages 6 to 17 and students) and include a glass of Port. Casa da Guitarra also has a daily one-hour show with a glass of Port, inside its instrument shop.

Winter in Porto (December to February)

Winter is cool and often wet, with fewer visitors. Christmas lights go up in late November, and it is a good season for long lunches and a francesinha.

Key Events and Activities

• Christmas: Christmas lights go up across the centre from late November, and Christmas markets with wooden stalls usually set up on Praça da Batalha and at Cordoaria. Across the river, WOW's "WOW é Natal" lights up the Gaia cultural quarter from late November into early January; the 2026 edition opens on 21 November. See wow.pt.
• New Year's Eve: The free party is on Avenida dos Aliados, with concerts from about 22:00 and fireworks at midnight. You can also watch fireworks from the Ribeira or Gaia riverfront. The council publishes the line-up in December.
• Janeiras: In early January, groups go from door to door singing traditional New Year songs.
• Essência do Vinho: A big wine fair in the Palácio da Bolsa, usually at the end of February, with hundreds of producers pouring (in 2026 it ran from 26 February to 1 March). See essenciadovinho.com.
• Fantasporto: The fantasy and sci-fi film festival at Batalha Centro de Cinema, running from late February into early March. The 2027 edition is set for 26 February to 7 March. See fantasporto.com. Praça da Batalha 47, 4000-101 Porto.

Whatever the season, bring comfortable shoes. Porto is steep, and the best views are at the top of a climb.
