The exhibition "SIMETRIAS OCULTAS EM MUROS DE VIDRO" focuses on diatoms, which are microscopic single-celled algae encased in silica walls. These organisms are presented as a bridge between science and art, showcasing their precise geometry and vital role in aquatic ecosystems, where they generate oxygen, fix carbon, and support the food web.

The exhibition invites visitors on a journey to discover diatoms from the Parque de Serralves and globally, emphasizing their significance and inspiring qualities. It merges ancient and contemporary perspectives, blending scientific accuracy with artistic expression to underscore the importance of these invisible worlds and the silent beauty that sustains life on Earth.

Curated by Laura Guimarães and Marina Dolbeth from CIIMAR, in partnership with Fundação de Serralves, with Helena Freitas and Marta Tavares, the exhibition is developed under the UNESCO Ocean-Expert Chair at the University of Porto. Tickets can be purchased to attend this event, which runs from October 30, 2026, to January 31, 2027, at Parque de Serralves.
