Hello Porto lovers,
There’s a certain magic to the way Porto reveals itself from above. It’s a city built on hills, a cascade of terracotta roofs tumbling down to meet the shimmering Douro River. For me, no trip here is complete—whether it’s your first or your fiftieth—without taking a moment to see it all from a different perspective. It’s in those moments, looking out over the twin cities of Porto and Gaia, connected by their iron bridges, that you truly feel the soul of this place.
Over the years, I’ve collected my favourite spots, from hidden, free viewpoints to chic rooftop bars perfect for a sunset toast. And because things are always evolving in our dynamic city, I’ve put together a fresh guide for 2025 and 2026. So, grab your camera and a good pair of walking shoes; let’s go find the best views in Porto.
Sometimes, the best views are the ones you don’t have to pay a premium for. These are the classic, must-see "miradouros" (viewpoints) that form the backbone of Porto’s visual identity. They are the places where photographers gather at golden hour and where locals come to unwind.
Let's start with the undisputed king of Porto viewpoints. If you only have time for one, make it this one. Located across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, the terrace of the Serra do Pilar Monastery offers a panorama so perfect it feels like a film set. You get the entire sweep: the majestic Dom Luís I Bridge in the foreground, the colourful Ribeira district clinging to the hillside, and the river bustling with Rabelo boats. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, and once you’re there, you’ll understand why. The sunset from here is simply legendary.
Right at the end of the Dom Luís I Bridge on the Gaia side, Jardim do Morro is less a formal garden and more of Porto’s communal front porch. On any sunny evening, you’ll find the grassy slopes packed with a cheerful mix of locals and travellers, all gathered for the main event: the sunset. The atmosphere is electric, with street musicians often providing a live soundtrack as the city lights begin to twinkle. It’s casual, it’s free, and it’s pure Porto.

For a view from the very heart of the city, you have to climb. The Baroque Clérigos Tower has been Porto’s most iconic landmark for over 250 years, and scaling its 240 steps is a rite of passage. The narrow spiral staircase is part of the adventure, but the reward is a breathtaking 360-degree view from 75 meters up. You’ll see the entire historic centre, the river, and all the way to the Atlantic. It’s a powerful way to understand the city's layout.
Tucked away near the old Jewish quarter, this viewpoint feels like a local secret. It’s technically on private land, but the owners graciously leave the gates open for visitors. The view is raw and unfiltered—a classic, unobstructed vista of the cathedral, the bridge, and the sprawling wine cellars of Gaia. It’s quieter and more contemplative than the other big viewpoints, offering a moment of peaceful reflection amidst the city buzz.
Sometimes, a world-class view is made even better with a perfectly crafted cocktail or a crisp glass of vinho verde in hand. Porto’s rooftop bar scene has exploded in recent years, offering everything from chic lounges to relaxed, hidden gems.
Situated atop the Espaço Porto Cruz in Gaia, this bar lives up to its name. The 360-degree views are simply phenomenal, offering a slightly different angle on the classic Serra do Pilar panorama. It's a vibrant, stylish spot known for its inventive Port wine cocktails—a fantastic way to experience our city's most famous export in a new light. With live DJs on many evenings, the atmosphere is sophisticated yet fun.
For a touch of pure luxury, nothing beats the terrace at The Yeatman. While this is a five-star hotel, the public is welcome at Dick's Bar & Bistro, which shares the same jaw-dropping view over Porto's historic skyline. The wine list, as you’d expect from a premier wine hotel, is encyclopedic. It's the perfect place for a special occasion or when you simply want to indulge in one of the city's most exclusive vistas.
This is a personal favourite and a true hidden treasure. Perched above the charming Miragaia neighbourhood, Mirajazz is an intimate rooftop bar with a soulful atmosphere. The views of the river and the Arrábida bridge are fantastic, but the real draw is the live jazz music on weekend evenings. It’s small, unpretentious, and utterly magical. Finding this place makes you feel like you’ve discovered a real piece of Porto.
A rooftop bar on top of a shopping centre might sound unusual, but LIFT is a surprisingly cool and casual spot. Located right in the city centre, it offers a fantastic urban perspective. It's the perfect place to take a break from shopping on Rua de Santa Catarina, with reasonably priced drinks and a relaxed, unpretentious vibe. It proves you don't always have to be by the river to get a great city view.
Whether you’re climbing an ancient bell tower or settling into a plush sofa with a cocktail, taking the time to see Porto from above is essential. Each viewpoint tells a different story about our city’s past, present, and future. My final tip? Wear comfortable shoes. The best views in this city are often earned with a bit of a walk, but I promise, they are always worth the effort.
