There's nothing quite like the awe-inspiring beauty of the ocean, and SEA LIFE Porto brings it right to our doorstep. Home to over 3,000 creatures, this aquarium is a must-visit for families. My favorite part? Portugal's first underwater tunnel, where you can feel completely immersed in marine life! Children adore the interactive exhibits, the fascinating lectures, and especially the feeding demonstrations. Keep an eye out for the country's largest collection of majestic cowtail stingrays. Outside, there’s a lovely playground and refreshing views of the Atlantic, perfect for a breath of fresh air.
Prepare for an incredible voyage at World of Discoveries, an interactive museum and theme park that truly transports families back to the Age of Portuguese Discoveries. It's a fantastic way to introduce children to our nation's rich maritime history. Through immersive settings, thrilling sensory effects, lifelike animatronic characters, and even a boat ride, visitors explore the epic journeys of Portuguese explorers. This attraction is ideal for children aged 3 to 12 and typically takes a delightful 1 to 2 hours to explore. It's truly one of the most engaging Porto attractions for families!
For something a little different, the Porto Tram Museum offers a charming glimpse into the city's past. Housed in the old Massarelos power station, this museum showcases a wonderful collection of vintage trams and other vehicles that once gracefully navigated Porto's hilly streets. Kids love climbing aboard the historic trams and learning about the evolution of public transportation in a hands-on way. It’s a nostalgic and educational experience for all ages.
Get your cameras ready! The 3D Fun Art Museum Porto is an incredibly playful experience, perfect for families looking to capture some truly unique and hilarious photos. With dozens of memorable scenes and mind-bending optical illusions, this museum provides endless opportunities for creativity and laughter for all ages. It’s an interactive art gallery where you become part of the art!
Just a short drive from the bustling city centre, Zoo Santo Inácio offers a truly wild escape. It's the largest and greenest zoo in northern Portugal, providing a spacious home to 800 animals of 250 different species. My family loves the daily demonstrations of reptiles and magnificent birds of prey, and watching the feedings of penguins, playful otters, curious lemurs, and the majestic Asian lions. It’s a full day of discovery and wonder for children and adults alike!
Porto's iconic concert hall, Casa da Música, isn't just for grown-ups! This architectural marvel also embraces families with a range of wonderful activities. They offer engaging workshops and "First Concerts" specifically designed for babies and children from three months to six years old – a magical introduction to music. Guided tours are also available, allowing you to explore the building's unique architecture, which is fascinating even for older children.
No trip to Porto is complete without experiencing the Douro River, and the Six Bridges Cruise is a wonderful option for families. This popular 50-minute boat trip on traditional Rabelo boats offers stunning panoramic views of Porto's iconic bridges and picturesque riverbanks. It’s a relaxing way to see the city from a different perspective and kids often enjoy the gentle movement of the boat and spotting landmarks.
For active families and adventurous teenagers, Matosinhos Beach offers the perfect introduction to surfing. With its gentle, long waves, it's an ideal spot for beginners to learn to ride the board. Several local schools provide lessons with experienced instructors and all the necessary equipment. It’s an exhilarating way to experience the Atlantic coast and one of the best things to do with kids in Porto if they love the ocean!
If you have football enthusiasts in your family, a visit to the FC Porto Museum is an absolute must. This engaging museum meticulously details the club's illustrious history through interactive exhibits and cutting-edge technology. My son was mesmerized! Stadium tours are also available, allowing you to walk in the footsteps of legendary players and get a behind-the-scenes look at the iconic Estádio do Dragão.
Sometimes, all you need is a wide-open space for children to run free, climb, and simply be kids. Porto boasts several magnificent parks that are perfect for a relaxing family afternoon.
As the largest urban park in Portugal, Parque da Cidade is a true treasure. Spanning over 80 hectares, it offers vast green lawns perfect for picnics, tranquil lakes, and extensive paths ideal for walking and cycling. You’ll find numerous playgrounds scattered throughout, a small farm that delights younger children, and even a restaurant. A unique feature is its direct access to Praia Internacional Beach, allowing you to combine a park day with some seaside fun! It's an indispensable part of Porto with kids.
These romantic 19th-century gardens are not only beautiful but also offer some of the most stunning panoramic views over the Douro River and the city. Families love strolling along the winding trails, observing the majestic free-roaming peacocks (always a hit with children!), and playing on the sprawling lawns. The gardens also feature a fantastic playground and an Environmental Education Centre, making it both beautiful and educational.
Part of the renowned Serralves Contemporary Art Museum, this expansive park is a destination in itself. It features beautifully manicured formal gardens, serene wooded paths, open lawns perfect for play, and fascinating outdoor sculptures. A definite highlight for families is the Treetop Walk, offering a unique perspective of the park from above, and a charming farm complete with animals. On Saturdays and Sundays, Serralves often organizes creative workshops specifically for families, enriching your Porto family experience.
For a quieter, more contemplative family outing, the Jardim Botânico do Porto is a tranquil oasis. With its lush bamboo groves, exotic cacti collections, and serene ponds, it’s a wonderful place to escape the city's hustle and bustle. Children can enjoy exploring the diverse plant life and perhaps even spotting some local wildlife.
If your children are craving pure, unadulterated playtime, Quinta do Covelo is the place to go. This park is renowned for its large and exciting playground, featuring climbing frames, swings, and, most famously, a long zipline that kids absolutely adore. It's a fantastic spot for children to burn off energy and make new friends.
