Hello, fellow Porto lovers! Baris here, from the Oporto Weekly team. One of the questions I get most often from friends planning a visit is, "Is Porto a good city for kids?" My answer is always a resounding, heartfelt yes! While we’re famous for our historic cellars and stunning riverside views—which are wonderful, of course—there's a whole other side to our city that’s bursting with energy, creativity, and fun for the entire family. Porto for families is not just an option; it's a fantastic choice.
Forget any notion that you’ll be dragging bored children through stuffy museums. Porto has reimagined the family holiday, offering experiences that are just as captivating for little ones as they are for us grown-ups. So, I’ve put together my personal guide to the very best kid-friendly adventures our city has to offer for 2025 and 2026. Let's explore!
Porto’s museums have truly mastered the art of making learning an adventure. These aren't your typical "look but don't touch" galleries. Here, kids are encouraged to get hands-on, making them perfect for curious minds and endless energy.
If you want to bring history to life, this is the place. The World of Discoveries is less a museum and more an interactive theme park that chronicles the epic voyages of Portuguese explorers like Vasco da Gama and Ferdinand Magellan. My favourite part—and the one kids go wild for—is the boat ride that simulates the journey across different continents. With costumed guides and life-sized ship replicas, it’s an immersive experience that will have your family feeling like true adventurers.
Located near the city park with a view of the Atlantic, SEA LIFE Porto is a guaranteed hit. It's the perfect escape, especially on a rare rainy Porto day. The highlight, without a doubt, is the magnificent underwater ocean tunnel. There's something truly magical about watching sharks, rays, and shimmering schools of fish glide gracefully overhead. The rockpool experience, where kids can touch a starfish, is also a firm favourite. It’s an enchanting look into the marine world that captivates all ages.
Just across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, you'll find the incredible World of Wine (WOW) cultural district. While many of its experiences are geared towards adults, The Chocolate Story is pure family bliss. This museum takes you on a delicious journey from the cacao bean to the chocolate bar, with plenty of interactive displays and, most importantly, tastings! It’s educational, fun, and a dream come true for anyone with a sweet tooth.
If you have any football (or soccer, for my American friends) fans in your family, a pilgrimage to the Estádio do Dragão is non-negotiable. The FC Porto Museum is a modern, high-tech celebration of one of Europe's most storied clubs. The trophy room is dazzling, but it's the interactive displays that really score goals with the kids. I highly recommend booking the combined Museum + Stadium Tour. Walking through the players' tunnel onto the pitch is a thrilling moment for fans of any age.

Beyond the big-name attractions, some of Porto's most memorable family activities are found in its more unique, story-driven spaces. These are the places that spark imagination and create those quirky holiday photos you'll cherish for years.
Prepare for some serious fun and a camera roll full of hilarious pictures. The 3D Fun Art Museum is filled with incredible optical illusions and 3D paintings that you and your family can step right into. You can surf a giant wave, escape a dinosaur, or fly on a magic carpet. It's wonderfully silly, completely interactive, and a fantastic way to spend an hour or two, letting everyone’s creativity run wild.
Tucked away in the historic tunnels of the Alfândega (Customs House) is a truly unique experience. Porto Legends uses stunning 360º video projections, holograms, and immersive sound to bring the city's most famous myths and fables to life. It’s a dramatic and atmospheric way to connect with the soul of Porto, narrated by actors in a way that feels both theatrical and magical. It’s a bit different and absolutely captivating.
Many visitors think of Serralves as just a contemporary art museum, but it is so much more—and a true paradise for families. The museum itself often hosts wonderful family-friendly workshops. But the real star is the expansive parkland. You can wander through beautiful gardens, visit a small working farm with adorable animals, and—best of all—experience the Treetop Walk, an elevated pathway that takes you on a stunning journey through the forest canopy. It's a perfect blend of culture and nature.
When it's time to burn off some energy and enjoy Porto's lovely climate, our city's parks are the perfect destination. They are more than just green spaces; they are social hubs, playgrounds, and beautiful escapes from the urban bustle.
The Crystal Palace Gardens are my go-to recommendation for a relaxing afternoon. The panoramic views over the Douro River are simply breathtaking. But for kids, the main attraction is the flock of majestic peacocks that roam freely, showing off their incredible feathers. There's also a great playground and plenty of lawn space for a picnic. It's a truly enchanting spot.
As the largest urban park in Portugal, the Parque da Cidade is an absolute gem. It’s so vast you can easily spend an entire day here and not see it all. Rent bikes, find a spot by one of the many lakes to watch the ducks, or let the kids choose from several different playgrounds. Best of all, the park's network of paths leads you directly to the Atlantic coast, so you can combine a park visit with some time on the beach.
If you want to experience Porto like a local family, head to Quinta do Covelo. It's less known to tourists, which gives it a wonderfully relaxed and authentic atmosphere. The park is home to one of the best and largest adventure playgrounds in the city, with structures suitable for toddlers all the way up to older kids. It’s the perfect place to let them run free while you grab a coffee from the on-site café.
Just a short drive away in Vila Nova de Gaia, this beautiful park is a mix between a nature reserve and a zoo. It focuses on native Iberian species, and most of the animals are rescues that couldn't be returned to the wild. The three-kilometer walking trail takes you through diverse habitats, offering a peaceful and educational experience. It's incredibly affordable and a wonderful way to teach children about local wildlife and conservation.
Porto is a city that welcomes families with open arms, offering a rich tapestry of activities that are engaging, educational, and, most of all, fun. So pack your bags, bring your sense of wonder, and get ready to create some unforgettable family memories in our beautiful city.
A final tip from me: For popular attractions like SEA LIFE and the World of Discoveries, always check their websites to book tickets online in advance. You'll often save a few euros and, more importantly, get to skip the queues—a lifesaver when you have impatient little ones in tow!
